Frequently asked questions
The short, straight answers about Resume Builder — what it costs, what the score means, where your data lives. For the longer treatment, see the guides and the blog.
Getting started
Is Resume Builder really free?
Yes — completely. The builder, every template, the ATS checker, the AI writing help, and PDF and DOCX downloads are all free, with no trial, no credit card, and no premium tier. The site is funded by clearly labeled ads on its public pages. Ads never appear inside your resume or your downloads.
Do I need an account to build or download a resume?
No. Guests get the complete product: build, check, and download as much as you like. An account exists only if you want your resumes backed up and synced between devices — it unlocks nothing, because nothing is locked.
How do I start?
The guided wizard asks six short sets of questions — contact details, summary, experience, education, skills, and the job you are targeting — and builds a live preview as you go. If you would rather see a finished shape first, the examples page loads a complete, clearly labeled sample resume you can edit. You can switch to the full studio editor at any point.
I already have a resume. Can I just check it?
Yes. The ATS checker takes pasted resume text and shows you the extracted text in parser reading order, a readiness score with plain-language fixes, and — if you paste a job description — your keyword coverage with the full missing-keyword list, not a teaser of it.
Can I keep more than one resume?
Yes. You can keep multiple resumes and take snapshot versions of each, which is how tailoring stays manageable: one base resume, a tailored version per serious application, and the freedom to roll back to an earlier version.
ATS & checking
What does the ATS score actually mean?
It is our own diagnostic — a 0–100 readiness score computed from published checks: parse-safe layout, contact details present as plain text, a summary, dated roles, a dedicated skills section, how many of your bullets carry real numbers and strong action verbs, and, when you paste a job description, keyword coverage of that posting. The methodology page documents the full rubric. It is not an employer's score, and no tool can promise you a hiring decision — employers configure their systems differently.
What is the extracted-text view?
Your resume rendered as plain text in the order a parser reads it. If your name, dates, or jobs come out scrambled or missing there, they may come out that way for an employer's system too. It is the fastest honest test of whether a format parses — every template here is built to keep this view clean.
Should I add every missing keyword the checker finds?
Only the ones that truthfully describe your experience. Keyword coverage helps a parser match you to a posting; invented skills fall apart at the first interview question. If a term matters and you have the experience, add the bullet that proves it. If you do not have it, an honest gap beats a borrowed keyword.
Which format should I send — PDF or DOCX?
Send the format the employer asked for. When the posting allows either, PDF preserves your layout exactly as you saw it. Both formats are free and unlimited here, so the employer's instruction is the only deciding factor.
Do these templates parse correctly?
They are designed to: single-column layout, standard section headings (Summary, Experience, Education, Skills), contact details as plain text in the body, dated roles. No text boxes, no tables carrying your history, no skill bars or photos. Run any finished resume through the extracted-text view to confirm it for yourself.
AI help
Will the AI invent experience for my resume?
No — this is a hard rule, not a setting. The writing help only reworks what you enter: stronger verbs, cleaner bullet structure, a summary drafted from your actual roles and skills. It never adds employers, dates, qualifications, or numbers. If a bullet has no number, it stays unquantified and you get a hint to add a real one if you have it.
Where does my text go when I use the AI help?
Nowhere. The writing help runs locally, in your browser, on your device. Your resume text is not sent to an AI server for the help features — which is also why the help is free without limits.
What can the AI help actually do?
Four things: improve bullet points (verb and structure), draft a professional summary from your roles and skills, reword your existing bullets toward a job description you paste, and a light grammar polish. It works on wording only — the facts, and the decisions about what to claim, stay yours.
Privacy & accounts
Where is my resume stored?
In your own browser's local storage, on your device. That is the whole architecture: the builder, the checker, and the AI help all run locally. You can delete any resume from this device at any time in the studio, and clearing your browser storage removes everything.
What does an account actually do?
Backup and sync, nothing else. Sign in with Google or a username and password and your resumes follow you between devices. Signing in never unlocks features, raises limits, or changes what you can download — guests and account holders get the identical product.
Do you sell my data?
No. There is nothing central to sell: your resume content lives in your browser. The site carries advertising on its public pages, which is how it stays free. The privacy policy describes the details in plain language.
Downloads & formats
Are downloads really unlimited and watermark-free?
Yes. Download as many times as you need, in PDF and DOCX, with no watermark and no 'trial' that turns into a subscription. Downloading is the moment many builders charge for; it is the moment we refuse to.
What can I download?
PDF and DOCX of any resume, plus plain-text and HTML exports from the studio — the plain-text version is genuinely useful for pasting into application forms that ask you to re-type your resume. Cover letters download the same way.
Will ads appear in my downloaded resume?
Never. Ads exist only on this website's public pages and in the brief processing screen shown while a download is generated. The document you download contains your resume and nothing else.
